Description
This is a pair of raised grave slabs, memorials to George Wildsmith and George Stringer, located approximately 10 meters south of the west tower of the Church of St. Peter. The slabs date from around 1723 and 1724 and are made of ashlar. One memorial is for George Wildsmith, described as the founder at the Banke Furnace in the Parish of Thornhill, who died on 28th July 1724 at the age of 27. The other memorial is for George Stringer senior, a yeoman from Woolley Edge, who died on 11th January 1723 at the age of 64. Both slabs feature channelled borders and finely-carved semicircular-arched heads. The slab on the left includes winged-head spandrels and a carved heart motif.
