Description
This building, located at 1 The Green, is a former school that has been converted into a house. It was constructed around 1718 and founded by William Wentworth of Woolley Hall. The structure is made of hammer-dressed stone and features stone slate roofs. It has two storeys and is divided into three cells.
The windows throughout the building are shallow double-chamfered mullioned windows with almost square reveals. The first cell is single storey, with quoins to the left, a two-light window, and a roof that has a hip to the left. The second cell has quoins to the left and features a two-light window on each floor, positioned to the left of a doorway that has composite jambs and a deep lintel with a chamfered surround. It also has a shaped kneeler, coping, and a stack on the left gable. The third cell is taller, with quoins, and includes a doorway with a quoined lintel and chamfered surround to the left of a six-light window that has a king-mullion above. The gables are coped with shaped kneelers and stacks. The rear of the building is fairly plain, with doorways leading to the first and second cells.
Inside, the second cell, which was the former master's house, features a large stop-chamfered spine beam. The third cell, which served as the school room, also has a stop-chamfered spine beam and joists that are partly revealed. Before becoming a house, the building functioned as a village institute.
