Description

Obelisk Lodge and attached screen walls are located on the drive to Nostell Park, crossing Featherstone Moor from Pontefract. Built in 1776 by Robert Adam, this lodge is made of sandstone ashlar and features a distinctive narrow pyramid shape with a round-headed archway. The archway is framed by a large Tuscan doorcase topped with a pedimented entablature. A fluted frieze and moulded cornice extend from the pediment, and above it is a blind oeil-de-boeuf. A moulded impost band runs through the archway. The lower part of the pyramid contains accommodation, illuminated by narrow single light windows on the ground floor at the front and on the first floor of the sides, with chimney flues integrated into the pyramid. The apex of the pyramid was missing at the time of the 1986 survey. Each side of the lodge has a short screen wall that ends in a wide square pier. The outer (northern) entrance features wrought-iron double gates with a straight-railing design, lower panels of intersecting segments, small finials and pendants between the railings, and decorative cresting.
