Description
Stank Cottages are a pair of estate workers' houses built in the mid to late 18th century by John Carr for Edwin Lascelles, 1st Lord Harewood. They are constructed from punch-dressed stone and feature stone slate roofs, with a T-shaped plan and two storeys. The symmetrical facade has seven bays, with the central three bays being taller, set forward, and gabled, flanked by two-bay wings. There is a continuous ashlar plinth and an impost band above the ground-floor windows, while the first-floor sill band is present only on the central three bays. The ground-floor bays contain round-arched windows and doorways with stone surrounds. The central three bays have 12-pane sash windows with a fixed upper light and 9-pane sashes above, all in plain stone surrounds. The gable is coped and pedimented. The wings have altered windows with raised sills and a single sash window above. The sixth bay features a doorway with a glazed fanlight. Each wing has a ridge stack and a stack at the junction with the central three bays, contributing to the balanced composition of the building.
