Description

Forge House and the attached archway leading to Home Farm workshops date from the mid-18th century and were designed by John Carr for Edwin Lascelles, the 1st Lord Harewood. The building is constructed from punch-dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. It is a single-storey structure with two doorways at the right end and a larger full-height doorway at the left end, flanked by five large multi-paned windows. There is a wooden eaves band and a hipped roof. The rear of the building includes a flue-box at the left end and two square windows, which are blocked, with plain-stone surrounds. A central lateral stack is present. On the left-hand return, there is a three-light flat-faced mullioned window next to the attached archway. The archway features a segmental arch with flat projecting coping and an inner rebate for gates. Inside, there is a large open room that contains three well-constructed forges.
