Description
Stank Cottages and the attached linking outbuilding are a row of three estate workers' cottages built in the mid to late 18th century by John Carr for Edwin Lascelles, 1st Lord Harewood. They are constructed from punch-dressed stone and feature stone slate roofs, arranged in an L-shaped plan over two storeys.
Number 1 is gable-fronted and has single-storey sheds attached to the rear, which connect to Numbers 2 and 3 at right angles to the left. Numbers 2 and 3 each have three first-floor windows. The cottages display quoins, with Number 1 featuring an ashlar plinth and a first-floor sill/impost band. It has a giant archivolt-arched recess with flat-arched sash windows, adorned with voussoirs and a projecting sill. The triangular pediment above has moulded coping, and there is a rear gable stack. The left-hand return of Number 1 includes a sash window with tie-stone jambs and a smaller window above.
The linking outbuilding has six doorways with tie-stone jambs, with the lintels aligned to the slope of the ground, some of which have been altered to windows. Numbers 2 and 3 feature doorways with monolithic jambs to the right of two bays of square windows, which have plain-stone surrounds and small-pane casements. The gable is coped with kneelers on the left side, and there is a single ridge stack. This group of buildings forms a balanced composition with Numbers 4 and 5, as well as 6, 7, and 8.
