Description
This outbuilding, located approximately 10 metres to the north-west of the west wing at Thorp Arch Hall, dates from around 1750 and has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. It was likely designed by John Carr for William Gossip. The structure is built from coursed magnesian limestone and features a stone slate roof. It is two storeys high and consists of three bays across and one bay deep. The building has large quoins and its east side faces the courtyard behind Thorp Arch Hall. This side includes three 20th-century casements set in 19th-century chamfered ashlar surrounds, positioned beneath three additional 20th-century casements in plain openings. The building has an eaves band, moulded gable copings, a truncated end stack on the left, and a short, corniced ridge stack to the right of centre.
On the right return, there is a casement inserted below a pedimented gable that features a blind Diocletian window in the tympanum. The left return has an original doorway with a deep lintel and a matching gable. The interior has been altered and features later roof trusses. The Diocletian motif is typical of James Paine, who communicated with Gossip about the proposed house at Thorp Arch before John Carr became involved. It is possible that the outbuildings are part of an original design suggested by Paine, although they were executed by Carr. Relevant documents can be found in the Thorp Arch estate papers at Leeds City Archives, particularly in the Day Book from 1749-51.
