Description

The Rock Inn and former stables is a public house dating from around 1800. It features painted ashlar and a stone roof with coped gable ends and end stacks, along with a plain stone eaves course. The building is two storeys tall with an attic and is three windows wide. The windows are sashes with glazing bars, although the ground floor has been altered to modern casements. A central stone doorway is flanked by pilasters and an entablature, topped with a large overlight that also has glazing bars. There are round-headed attic windows in the gable ends.

To the left, set back, are the former stables, constructed from painted dressed stone and topped with a stone roof featuring a coped gable end. These stables are also two storeys high and consist of three bays. The first-floor openings are segmental-headed and boarded up, while the ground floor has a round-headed doorway and round-arched windows on either side, all with large plain stone sills.

At the rear, the steep ground slope has resulted in the building being constructed over approximately six round arches, some of which form the cellars. A straight flight of stone steps on the left side provides access to the front ground floor. There is a plain surround to a wide doorway on the far right, which is below the former stables and likely provided additional stalls. The main block has a narrow entrance on the left and a wide doorway on the right for cellar access. Three arched recesses on the left have pins for external hinges, indicating they may have been used as separate store-rooms or cart shelters. The interior was replanned and refitted in the late 20th century.
