Description
Bramley Baths is a public swimming facility built in 1904 and restored in 1992. It features coursed gritstone and ashlar with a slate roof, and is located on a corner site. The building is designed in a classical style and includes a two-storey, three-bay entrance block alongside a single-storey baths complex that has a chimney.
The entrance block showcases double doors with a fanlight, all under an ornate scrolled hood supported by console brackets. Flanking square windows are present, along with a four-light mullioned window on the right and three two-light windows on the first floor. Above the first two bays is a Dutch gable that displays the Leeds coat of arms and the words 'PUBLIC BATHS' in recessed panels. The gable is adorned with owl and ball finials, and the building has a hipped roof with corniced end stacks.
Moulded strings at the first-floor level extend across the single-storey range at the window lintel and wall top levels. To the right of the entrance is a gateway with double wooden gates and square piers topped with cornices and ball finials. Further right is a two-storey gabled engine-house block featuring a segmental-arched entrance with double wooden doors, a wrought-iron scrolled panel in the overlight, and a round-arched window in the gable above. The rear of this block has a tapered square chimney with moulded stone brackets and a deep cornice.
To the left of the entrance, the baths complex has two two-light windows set in ornate pedimented surrounds, with aprons below and a small moulded round-arched pediment rising above the parapet. On the left return, which faces Calverley Lane, there are two projecting entrance bays with keyed round arches, pediments featuring scrolled plaques, ball finials, and pyramid roofs, as well as a four-light mullioned window with a pediment in between. The gable of the swimming baths roof rises at the rear and includes a keyed round window, scrolled kneelers, gable coping, and a raised triangular pediment above a carved band with a central plaque and scrolls.
Although the interior was not inspected, it is reputed to contain fine stained glass, tiling, and decorative features that were preserved during the extensive restoration. Bramley Baths is notable as the only complete example of the eight public baths built in Leeds between 1899 and 1904.
