Description

The building at 28 Back Lane in Guiseley is a farmhouse, later converted into a house, dating to 1725. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with quoins to the left corner, and has a stone slate roof. The design follows a two-unit central lobby-entry plan. The two-storey, two-bay facade is nearly symmetrical, with a doorway slightly offset to the right of centre. The doorway has a shouldered architrave with a pseudo-keystone and moulding carried across large impost blocks below the lintel. Above the door is a square datestone with raised lettering, bearing the initials "P" and the date "H S 17.25". Above the datestone is a blocked single-light window with an architrave matching the door surround. There are two windows on each floor; the left-hand windows are of four lights, but the ground floor window lacks its first and third mullions. The right-hand windows are of three lights. All windows have square flat-faced flush mullions and moulded architraves with plain raised sills. A ridge chimney is positioned in line with the door. The rear elevation is of less architectural interest. The interior is divided into a housebody to the left and two small, longitudinally-partitioned rooms to the right. The elaborate treatment of the facade is unusual for this area in a house of this size. The front wall of the adjacent property, number 26, has quoins at the joint and was likely originally part of the barn associated with this farmhouse.
