Description
The barn and stables, which include a granary, are located approximately 50 meters north of Little Preston Hall. They date from the late 17th century or early 18th century and have been altered over time. The structure is made of hand-made brick and features a stone slate roof. It has an L-shaped plan, with the barn running north-south along the west side of the farmyard, while the stables and granary are positioned at right angles, forming the north side.
The barn includes a small square-headed wagon door near the corner. The stable range is two storeys high and consists of four bays. It has a doorway in the second bay, rectangular windows at ground level (most of which are altered or damaged), and square windows above. At the right end of the first floor, there is a doorway accessed by steps that are flush with the front wall. The gable end of the barn has been rebuilt in modern brick after a collapse, but it still features a hipped roof. Both the barn and stables have saw-toothed eaves bands, and the rear walls include cruciform breathers. The rear of the barn also has an owl-hole with a perching stone, while the rear of the stables displays a three-course band.
Inside, the stable range has king-post roof trusses with V-struts.
