Description

No. 60 Boar Lane is a shop and offices built around 1872, with alterations made in the 20th century. It is possibly designed by Thomas Ambler. The building features ashlar stonework and a slate roof, standing four storeys tall with five first-floor windows, showcasing an Italianate style. The ground floor has a late 20th-century boarded shop window, supported by exposed 19th-century twin cast-iron columns that have a plain design with spiral reeding on the lower third. The first and second floors have sash windows set in attached round arches, with columns and keystones. There are pilasters with carved plaques at each end, and the third floor has square windows. The facade is topped with an entablature that includes paterae, a dentilled eaves cornice, and a shallow blocking course. The interior has not been inspected. The facade matches the original details of No. 58, indicating that it is part of an important surviving group of buildings on the north side of Boar Lane, contemporary with notable later 19th-century shops, banks, and offices on the south side, many of which were also designed by Ambler. Although not listed in the 1872 directory, by 1875, the building was occupied by Jones and Calaum, drapers and silk merchants, who continued their business there until after 1888, according to the Leeds directories from 1872 to 1888.
