Description
29 Boar Lane is an inn and storerooms that has been converted into a bank. It was built around 1873 and altered in the 20th century. The building is constructed of orange brick with ashlar dressings and likely has a grey slate roof. It is a corner building with a three-window facade facing Boar Lane, four windows on Mill Hill, and a curved window at the corner. The design is in an ornate Italianate style, featuring a modillion cornice and an elaborate corner pediment, although the parapet is missing. The building has four storeys.
On the first floor, there are arcaded window arches with keyblocks, pilasters, and pilaster shafts topped with carved capitals, along with a Venetian window on the corner. The second floor has two-light round-arch windows set in round-arch openings, with pilaster shafts, decorative cast-iron tympanum, continuous carved impost, and a moulded sill cornice. The third floor features two-light elliptical-arched windows with pilaster shafts and a cable mould label above, as well as a moulded string at sill level.
The ground floor has a 20th-century bank facade at the corner, but retains original rusticated masonry and pilasters, with a segmental arch window and a round arch carriageway on the far right. The building was originally the Saracen's Head public house, operated by William Booth and Co., victualler. The design of the pilaster strip on the far left matches those on Nos 24-28, indicating that the same architect may have been involved, although the building's use required a different architectural style. The parapet has been removed since 1975.
