Description

LEEDS

SE3033 BOAR LANE 714-1/78/49 (North side) 29/09/95 No.59

GV II

Shop and offices. Late C19, altered C20. Ashlar, slate mansard roof. 4 storeys and attic, 1 three-window bay. Classical style. Late C20 shop front ground floor; sashes in architraves, segmental arches to 2nd floor, the centre window surmounted by segmental pediment; pilasters with tiled recessed plaques to 3rd floor and flanking the lunette dormer window which has a shallow triangular pediment and palmette finial. INTERIOR: not inspected. HISTORICAL NOTE: Boar Lane was rebuilt from 1869 and this building was occupied from 1872 by JA Doyle's glass and china warehouse. The business remained on the premises until after 1888 by which time JA Doyle was described as a cut-glass manufacturer and china and glass merchant whose home was at No.26 Blenheim Terrace (not included). The difference in the style of the building was perhaps intended to distinguish it from the textile-based businesses using Nos 58 & 60 (qqv). The directory entries also indicate that the flanking blocks, (identical and possibly by Thomas Ambler) were completed shortly afterwards. (Directories of Leeds for 1872, 1875 & 1888).
