Warehouse and offices, later hotel and public house, then shop. c1870, altered C20. For the business of Henry Cowbrough and Co, wine etc merchants. Rusticated ashlar, cast-iron details, slate roof. 4 storeys, 3 bays of 2,1,2 windows; 1-window bay to corner of Bank Street and 2-window bay to right return. Classical style, painted white. Late C20 boarded shop windows within rusticated stone pillars to ground floor; upper floor details include pilasters with ornate capitals flanking windows and supporting moulded string, entablature with carved scroll and key motifs, dentilled cornice supporting cast-iron balustrades to 2nd floor and balustraded parapet above 3rd. INTERIOR: not inspected. Identical to Nos 61 & 62 Boar Lane (qv), but this building differently used. H Cowbrough and Co, wine etc merchants, occupied Nos 62-65 Boar Lane in 1872; the address is Peel Buildings in 1875. Between 1878 and 1888 Henry Cowbrough, wine, spirit, ale, porter and cigar merchant opened the Peel Hotel, and the public house of that name continued until c1985. Part of the important group surviving on the north side of Boar Lane from the reconstruction of the street from 1869. (Directory of Leeds, 1872-1888).
