Description

No. 63 Boar Lane is a warehouse and office building, later used as a hotel and public house, and then as a shop. It was constructed around 1870 and altered in the 20th century. The building was originally for Henry Cowbrough and Co, wine and spirits merchants. It features rusticated ashlar stonework, cast-iron details, and a slate roof. The structure has four storeys and three bays with a configuration of two, one, and two windows; there is a one-window bay at the corner of Bank Street and a two-window bay on the right return. The building is designed in a classical style and is painted white.

The ground floor has late 20th-century boarded shop windows set within rusticated stone pillars. The upper floors display pilasters with ornate capitals flanking the windows, supporting a moulded string and an entablature with carved scroll and key motifs. A dentilled cornice supports cast-iron balustrades on the second floor and a balustraded parapet above the third. The interior has not been inspected but is noted to be similar to Nos 61 and 62 Boar Lane, although this building has been used differently.

Henry Cowbrough and Co occupied Nos 62-65 Boar Lane in 1872, and the address was referred to as Peel Buildings in 1875. Between 1878 and 1888, Henry Cowbrough operated the Peel Hotel, which remained a public house until around 1985. This building is part of an important group that has survived on the north side of Boar Lane since the street's reconstruction beginning in 1869.
