Description

61 and 62 Boar Lane are shops and offices built around 1870, with alterations made in the 20th century. The building features rusticated ashlar, cast-iron details, and a slate roof. It stands four storeys high and consists of two identical bays in a classical style. The ground floor has boarded late 20th-century shop fronts situated between 19th-century fluted cast-iron columns. The upper floors have windows where the original sashes have been replaced with 20th-century casements. These paired windows are set in architraves with pilasters, carved capitals, and moulded strings, along with panels that display scroll and key patterns. A deep dentilled cornice on brackets supports cast-iron window balustrades on the second floor, leading to a parapet with a balustrade above the third floor. The interior has not been inspected. The building is identical in style to No. 63 and was originally similar to Nos. 64 and 65, which have since been rebuilt and are not included in this listing. A break in the line of the rustication indicates a separation between the properties. Historically, this building is part of an important group that remains on the north side of Boar Lane, which was rebuilt in the 1870s. In 1872, the two shops were occupied by G and NS Snook, a draper, and C Goodall, a stationer and bookseller. By 1875, the upper floors were known as Goodall's Chambers, housing The British Empire Mutual Life Insurance Company, H Budgett, a tea merchant, and James Blakey, a pawnbroker. By 1888, No. 61 was used by Jones and Co., a sewing machine manufacturer, while No. 62, likely with the Chambers, was occupied by Goodall and Suddick, wholesale and retail stationers.
