Description

2 The Bourse is an office and warehouse building dating from around 1880, designed in the Italianate style. It features a grey slate roof and is constructed of ashlar stone. The building has three storeys and nine bays, with entrance bays at positions four and six, creating an almost symmetrical facade. The doorway in bay four has a moulded architrave and a rectangular fanlight, while bay six has a blocked wide round-arched entrance flanked by fluted pilasters and keyblocks. The ground floor windows are set in moulded architraves with scroll decoration above, the first-floor windows are rectangular with moulded heads, and the second-floor windows are round-headed with keyblocks. Each floor level is accentuated by moulded cornices, flat pilasters, and moulded impost bands. The eaves were obscured by scaffolding during the last survey.

The interior has not been inspected but is said to contain restaurant premises on the first floor to the left, featuring an ornate plaster ceiling. This space is linked to No. 21 Boar Lane. Historically, the property was likely owned by the Leeds Gas Light Company during the redevelopment of Boar Lane in 1869. By 1886, a restaurant was in operation, and the rooms to the right of the wide entrance were occupied by WH Turner and Co., a tobacco factory, according to an insurance map. This building is noted as one of the few unaltered late 19th-century ground-floor frontages in the area.
