Description

1, The Bourse is an office building constructed between 1869 and 1875, with alterations made in the 20th century. It is possibly designed by Thomas Ambler and features ashlar stonework and a grey slate roof. The building has a deep cornice with modillions and a balustraded parapet. It stands three stories tall and has a three-window range in an Italianate style, located on a corner site.

On the first floor, there are round-arched windows supported by panelled pilasters and a moulded impost band, with the central window being double-recessed and flanked by short fluted pilasters. The flanking sections have rusticated double pilasters and a deep modillioned cornice. The second floor mirrors the first but with less detailing. The ground floor has boarded shop fronts added in the 20th century.

On the right side of the building, the left two bays reflect the main façade, while the third bay is more elaborate, featuring a round-headed oriel window that extends through two stories and is topped with a pedimented gable. The interior has not been inspected. Originally built to accommodate the Leeds Corporation Gas Offices, the secretary in 1872 was James Lupton. By 1886, a 'Grand Restaurant' was operating in the building, likely including No. 3 Alfred Street, and there was a brick-arched wine cellar in the basement.
