Description
The Audus Hirst memorial, located approximately 30 meters south of the Church of St John the Baptist in Leeds, was erected in 1884. It was created by a sculptor from Leeds and is made of ashlar and marble. The memorial features a statue of a youthful winged figure carrying a garland, with its right arm raised and a hand missing. To the left of the statue is an urn, and the entire structure is supported by four composite columns that hold up a roof with a pedimented gable. The tympanum includes a carved shield and scrolls, while the entablature bears the inscription: "UNTIL THE DAY BREAK AND THE SHADOWS FLEE AWAY." The plinth of the statue commemorates Suzannah Audus Hirst, who died in 1884, her husband William, who died in 1896, and Edward Audus Hirst, who died in 1937. The sculptor's name is carved on the back of the memorial.
