Description
Moor End Cottage is a small house dating from the mid-18th century, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of squared, coursed magnesian limestone with a Welsh slate roof. The main part of the house is two storeys high with three windows on the first floor. A one-storey, one-bay wing is set back on the left, and a 20th-century wing extends to the rear right. Large quoins are visible. The central entrance has a part-glazed door with a three-part stone lintel, flanked by renewed three-light, horizontally-sliding sash windows with glazing bars, all under matching stone heads. The first floor has older windows of the same type, with a painted window positioned above the door. Shaped kneelers and chamfered gable copings are present, along with rebuilt brick end stacks. The recessed wing on the left features a French window set beneath a segmental stone arch, and has a monoclinal roof with an end stack. The left return side shows a clear raising of the rear eaves. The wing to the left, reputedly a former local bakehouse, contains an oven on the left side of the fireplace, featuring a cast-iron door in the shape of an arcaded panel. The cottage is notable as one of the few buildings in Boston Spa that predates the later 18th-century construction associated with the discovery of the Spa waters.
