Description

This is a pair of houses built in the early to mid-19th century in Boston Spa. They are located on the south side of High Street. The houses are constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a Welsh slate roof. The front facade is symmetrical and has three bays, rising three stories over a half basement. A set of four nosing stone steps leads to the central four-panel door, which has a plain overlight. Flanking the doorway are basement and ground-floor canted bay windows with nosed sills, holding sashes with 2, 4, and 2 panes of glass respectively. A first-floor balcony features an original iron balustrade decorated with honeysuckle motifs. The balcony has a blind central window flanked by French windows set beneath cambered brick arches. The second floor has projecting sills to later casements set beneath the eaves, with a blind central window. Brick end stacks are visible, with the right-hand stack cement-rendered. Simple iron railings enclose the wells in front of the basement windows and extend as handrails to the doorways. Later 20th-century additions to the rear are not of particular architectural interest.
