Description
South Lodge and the attached gatepiers are located at the west end of Moor End roundabout in Boston Spa. This lodge, built in the early 19th century, is associated with the Wetherby Grange estate. The structure is made of ashlar sandstone with a concealed Welsh slate roof, while the gatepiers are constructed from magnesian limestone, likely dating from the late 18th century and altered over time.
The lodge is a single-storey building with three bays plus an additional bay on the right side, which connects to the gatepiers through a projecting wall. It features a channel-rusticated plinth, and the central bay projects forward, showcasing a stylobate with four half-round steps leading to a Doric distyle in antis semicircular portico. This portico contains a glazed door flanked by sidelights within a moulded architrave. Each of the flanking bays has a recessed panel with a 16-pane sash window set in an architrave on sill blocks. Above, there is a plain frieze and a moulded cornice beneath a balustrade, which has ashlar dies and turned wooden balusters. A corniced stack is present on the right side.
On the left return, the structure mirrors the front bay but features a blind window. An addition at the front-right links the lodge to a rusticated gatepier topped with a teardrop finial, as well as to larger rusticated gatepiers that have bands and panelled blocks. Above these gatepiers are resited sandstone pedestals adorned with carved oak-leaf wreaths, from which rise bear's paws grasping severed human hands. The gatepiers are flanked by wing walls, each containing a blind door recess; the right wing wall has an end pier with a teardrop finial that curves towards the A1 embankment. The old iron gates are in very poor condition. The lodge is similar to another incomplete lodge located at the south end of Boston Road in Wetherby. The wall and gatepiers are included for their group value only, and any additions to the rear of the lodge are not of special interest.
