Description
This memorial, located approximately 30 meters south of the Church of St John, commemorates Eliza and William Hill and was created in 1884 and 1889 by Hodgson of Leeds. It is made of gritstone and features a cross set within a Norman-style arch, flanked by seated angels. The plinth bears the inscription: 'In Loving Memory of Eliza, wife of William Hill, The Heath, Adel, Born April 6th 1825, Died April 24th 1884. Also William Hill F.R.I.B.A. Architect, Born June 19th 1827, Died January 5th 1889.' Additional inscriptions on the left and right honor their sons, Herbert Hill (1862-1931) and William Hill (1865-1926). The grave plot is surrounded by stone curbs and bollards, and the sculptor's name is carved on the back. William Hill was also the architect behind the Leeds Chest Clinic at No.74 New Briggate.
