Description
Crank Mills is a mill built around 1792, consisting of two sections constructed for the Earl of Dartmouth. The building is made of thin coursed hammer-dressed stone and features a stone slate roof. It stands three storeys high and has a seven-bay original section with a taller three-bay addition on the left. All windows have plain stone surrounds, deep lintels, and slightly projecting sills. The fourth bay includes a taking-in door on the first floor, while the eighth and ninth bays have taller first-floor windows with raised lintels. All windows contain small-pane glazing.
To the right of the main building is a former engine house with a lean-to roof, which features a tall full-height window with a semicircular arch, impost, and keystone. The rear of the engine house has a taking-in door to the second bay and similar windows to those at the front. The left-hand return displays four bays of similar windows, with a taking-in door to the first floor of the second bay and a smaller window set in the gable. A plaque on the front notes that this was the first steam-driven woollen mill in West Yorkshire.
