Description

Becca Hall is a country house, now used as offices, built in the late 18th century and attributed to architect William Lindley for William Markham. The building was enlarged and altered in the 19th century. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features low-pitched hipped slate roofs across two levels. The original house has a rectangular double-depth plan, which was expanded with set-back receding crosswings and a rear extension.

The design is in a classical style and is symmetrical. The main range consists of two storeys and five bays, topped with a three-bay pediment that breaks a balustraded parapet. It includes a tetrastyle Tuscan porch with an entablature that is surmounted by a shield with scrolled bearers. There are large single-storey canted bays on each side and a tripartite sashed window above, likely a 19th-century alteration. The first floor has four sashed windows and an oculus in the pediment. The wings are two storeys high but appear as three, each featuring a first-floor sill band, with tripartite sashed windows in shallow segmental-headed recesses on both floors. Above the ground-floor windows, there are low tripartite mezzanine windows, along with a moulded cornice and low parapets adorned with urn finials at the corners.

The rear of the main range was remodelled in the 19th century to create the principal entrance and staircase. Inside, there is a central reception hall with a flying stone staircase from the 19th century. The principal ground-floor rooms boast moulded plaster decoration in an exuberant late 19th-century style, while the east wing features fielded panelling that may date back to the 18th century. William Markham, the original owner, served as Private Secretary to Warren Hastings, the Governor General of India. A service wing attached to the west end and a modern workshop wing to the north are not included in this listing.
