Description
The Old Poor House, now serving as a village meeting centre, was built in 1865. It features a rock-faced stone basement and a first floor made of red brick laid in stretcher bond, accented with an ashlar band and quoins, as well as white brick sill and impost bands. The building has a tile roof and stands two storeys tall with a three-bay gabled front.
The central doorway has interrupted jambs and an overlight, flanked by windows that have plain stone surrounds and a lintel band. On the first floor, there are stone ogee-arched windows with impost blocks and keystones, which are positioned beside an oval date plaque that reads: "TOWNSHIP OF CHURWELL THIS BUILDING WAS ERECTED BY THE OVERSEERS OF THE POOR AD 1865."
The gable is pedimented and features a circular recess. The right-hand side of the building faces Elland Road and includes a bus shelter that has been cut into the stone basement. The front has four bays of windows, and there is a dogtooth and dentil cornice along the eaves. A lateral stack is located between the first and second bays.
