Description
Churwell Bridge is an underbridge that carries the Leeds, Dewsbury & Manchester Railway line, built in the mid-1840s by Thomas Grainger. It is located approximately 328 meters south-east of Elland Road. The bridge features coursed local rock-faced sandstone with ashlar dressings. Both sides of the bridge are similarly detailed, showcasing a semi-circular arched span that springs from rock-faced jambs and is supported by an ashlar impost band. The arch is bordered by voussoirs with tooled margins along the intrados. The wing walls extend forward on either side of the span, curving around to end in short square piers. Large ashlar coping stones with a roll-moulded outer edge sit above the arch and on top of the wing walls. As an underbridge, it does not have a parapet.
