Description

Stank Hall Barn, also known as Major Greathead's Chapel, is a barn and chapel located on Dewsbury Road in Beeston. It was built in the late 15th to early 16th century for the Beeston family, with a 17th-century cross wing and alterations made for the Hodgson family. The structure is constructed from millstone grit and delph-stone, featuring timber framing and stone slate roofs. It consists of seven bays and has wide opposing barn doors at the eaves, along with slit vents.

At the southern end, there is a two-storey cross wing that includes four- and two-light recessed chamfered mullioned windows with hoodmoulds, rebuilt doorways on the west side, and a central upper floor ogee-arched doorway that is blocked on the south side, flanked by restored two-light mullioned windows.

Inside, the barn has oak aisle posts and king-post roof trusses. Tree-ring analysis indicates that the trees used for the timber frame were felled between 1448 and 1490. The cross wing is recognized as Major Greathead's Chapel. The building has been extensively studied, as noted in the West Yorkshire Archaeology Service Historic Buildings Survey, and it is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
