Description
This building is a row of five estate worker's cottages located at 59-63 Harrogate Road, dating from the early 19th century. The cottages were completely refenestrated in a more grand style in the early to mid-20th century. They are constructed from hammer-dressed stone and feature a stone slate roof, standing two storeys tall with a total of 16 first-floor windows. Each cottage has three bays with a central doorway that includes an architrave, consoles, and a hood. Cottages 60 and 62 are distinguished by triangular pediments above their doorways.
Above the doors, there are tripartite sash windows, while the flanking bays each contain a 12-pane sash window in a flush-wood surround, with a smaller 9-pane sash window above. The windows are topped with stone lintels and sills, and paired gutter brackets are present. The row has three square ridge stacks. The left-hand return features a sash window on each floor and retains the only original feature: a blind oculus at the apex of the gable. The cottages are included for their group value.
