Description

A house with two attached cottages, dating from the mid- to late 18th century, designed by John Carr. The buildings are constructed of hammer-dressed stone with stone slate roofs.

The main house (No. 38) is two storeys high and originally featured three windows on the first floor. A 20th-century canted-bay window has been inserted into the gable front, between two original windows which are now blocked, with their original lintels still visible. The first-floor windows are spaced irregularly, one being blind, and each has a plain-dressed wedge-shaped lintel originally cut to resemble shaped stones (voussoirs) and with projecting sills. A modillion pediment sits above the gable, within which is a blind circular opening. A chimney stack is located on the front of the gable and at the rear. A doorway on the left side leads to a later 19th-century shop, which is not considered to be of special architectural interest. The rear has another modillion pedimented gable. The right-hand return, facing Harrogate Road, features a plinth. A doorway is to the left, above which is a window; to the right are windows on both floors, all with the same style of monolithic lintels cut with false voussoirs and projecting sills.

The attached cottages to the right are single-storey and six bays wide. They have quoins on the right-hand side. Each cottage has a doorway with monolithic jambs on plinths, a tie-stone above the doorway, and a small window either side, with large monolithic lintels and sills. A gable stack is present. No. 38 complements the adjacent property at No. 37.
