Description

Cutler’s Cottage is a house dating to the 17th century, with an addition from the 19th century. The building is situated on the north side of Bondgate, Harewood. It is constructed of well-coursed gritstone with a stone slate roof. The original design was a two-cell central lobby-entry plan, with a later stable added. The building is two storeys in height, with a single-storey stable attachment.

The main doorway features composite jambs, a Tudor-arched lintel bearing a boldly incised date inscription ("16I C78" – referring to John Cutler), and a stop-chamfered surround that extends to form spandrels on the lintel. The flanking windows were originally four-light, but have been altered to two wider lights to accommodate sixteen-pane sashes, now with upper casements; smaller, similar windows sit above. A continuous cyma-moulded hoodmould runs across the ground floor. The gables are coped with kneelers, and include later stone stacks, alongside an original central ashlar stack. The rear of the building has been altered, with a mid-20th century addition. The right-hand return has a former two-light window, which has been altered into a doorway and is set beneath a hoodmould with mutilated carved-face stops. A window has been inserted above this. The stable attached at right angles to the main house also features a large sash window with a margin-dressed lintel and a tall gable stack.

Inside the first cell, which was originally the housebody, is a stop-chamfered spine beam of large scantling, scarf-jointed in conjunction with a modern fireplace. This suggests the former presence of a bressumer and firehood, indicative of a lobby-entrance plan. The second cell, the parlour, has a chamfered spine beam and floor joists with ogee stops. The fireplace here features a basket arch carried on cyma moulded corbels and a stop-chamfered surround.

Cutler’s Cottage is notable as one of only two 17th-century houses to have survived the 18th-century rebuilding of Harewood village. It is one of the few original free-hold properties on the Harewood estate.
