Description

A row of four estate workers' cottages dating from the first quarter of the 19th century, likely designed by Peter Atkinson of York for Edward Lascelles, 1st Earl of Harewood. Number 47 is older in origin but was rebuilt in the mid-19th century. The cottages are constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof. They extend to two storeys and have twelve first-floor windows. Numbers 48, 49, and 50 (to the left of number 47) each have three bays, with a doorway flanked by windows, and a window above the door. All openings have monolithic lintels cut with false voussoirs. Later 20th-century windows have been added either side of the first-floor window. A break in the building separates numbers 48 and 47, which has 18th-century punch-dressed quoins to the ground floor on the left and smoother 19th-century dressed quoins to the right. This section has three bays with a doorway to the left; the openings have monolithic, margin-dressed lintels, and the windows retain their original 12-pane Yorkshire sashes. Four stone ridge stacks are present.
