Description
Wetherby Lodge, gateway, and attached wall to Stockeld Park were likely built between 1758 and 1763, with an extension added around 1894. Designed by James Paine for William Middleton of Stockeld Park, the structure is made of ashlar stone and features Westmorland slate roofs. The arched gateway is flanked by two 2-storey lodges, each containing a single ground-floor room. To the left, there is a 2-bay, single-storey extension. The lodges and archway display vermiculated rustication and long and short quoins. The ground-floor windows are sash windows with glazing bars, and there is a blind recess to the left. A band runs at first-floor level, topped by a modillion cornice and a parapet that extends across the archway. The lodges have pyramidal roofs with ball finials, while the left extension has a hipped roof and a large central stack. To the right, there is a low wall featuring a blind circular window with keystones. The wrought-iron gates include side panels with a scroll motif, double gates with a ramped top, scroll motifs, and waved dog bars.
