Description

Barleyfield Road Bridge is a railway bridge built in 1847 for the York and North Midland Railway Company. It is constructed from rock-faced gritstone with a brick soffit and features a single-span, skew-arched design that allows a road to cross over a disused railway cutting. The segmental arch has voussoirs that align with courses springing from a soffit impost band. There are pylons on each side and projecting end piers that are connected by a nosed ashlar band, which sits beneath a more deeply coursed parapet topped with weathered ashlar copings. The bridge remains unaltered and original to the Church Fenton - Spofforth line, which opened on 10th August 1847 and was linked to Harrogate the following year.
