Description
The Swan and Talbot is a public house located on North Street in Wetherby. It dates from the early 18th century, although it may have an earlier core. The building has undergone significant alterations and extensions over the years. It features a stucco and cement render exterior, with tiled eaves courses on a pantile roof and Welsh slate roofs on the rear wings. The structure is two stories high and has five bays, with a wing at the rear left and a shorter wing in the rear angle. There are 20th-century flat-roofed additions to the rear right, which are not of special interest.
On the far left, there is a corniced pilaster. Between the first and second bays, there is a stone doorcase with a panelled double door set within a Tuscan-columned aedicule that includes triglyphs, a vermiculated frieze, and a pediment with a vermiculated tympanum. The ground-floor bays feature renewed sash windows with glazing bars, set in stone architraves with projecting sills. The first floor has unequally-hung nine-pane sashes in matching surrounds. The eaves are boxed to accommodate the swept roof. At the rear, the right wing has an external end stack.
The Swan and Talbot is historically significant as one of the main coaching inns in the town. After the fire in Wetherby in 1723, William Parker is noted to have insured the inn's movable goods for £500.
