Memorial And Grave Of Ethel Preston At Ngr 2673 3905 In Lawnswood Cemetery

The memorial and grave of Ethel Preston, located in Lawnswood Cemetery, was created in 1911. It is made of Italian marble and features a life-size statue of Ethel standing under a Classical porch supported by composite columns. This porch includes an entablature, cornice, and a balustraded parapet, with black marble panelled doors. Ethel is depicted outside a house holding a bunch of flowers. The right plinth bears the inscription: "TO THE DEAR MEMORY OF/ ETHEL/ WIFE OF WALTER PRESTON/ OF THE GRANGE BEESTON/ DIED MARCH 24th 1911 AGED 50 YEARS," while the left plinth reads: "TO THE DEAR MEMORY OF/ WALTER/ HUSBAND OF EMILY AND THE LATE ETHEL PRESTON/ DIED OCT 24th 1930." The memorial is reputed to be a replica of the entrance to The Grange in Beeston, which has since been demolished, and the doors of the memorial are slightly open.
