Description
The Basin of New Dock at Clarence Dock is a dock basin built around 1850, with repairs and restoration completed in 1996. It was likely designed by G Leather for the Aire and Calder Navigation Company. The structure is made of coursed squared gritstone blocks and measures approximately 100 meters by 50 meters, with added arms to the west and south that are not included in this description. This basin was an extension to the Cut and was constructed along the route of a proposed canal shown on a map from 1834. It was originally known as the Potato Dock due to the primary cargo handled there. Although further extensions were added by 1890, the rise of the railway system soon after the New Dock was built posed challenges to canal transport.
