Description
Crown Point Bridge over the River Aire is a road bridge built in 1842, which was widened on the east side in 1994-1995. Designed by George Leather, the bridge features stone abutments and road walls, a cast-iron arch, and a parapet with lattice steel work in the spandrels. It is designed in the Gothic Revival style, showcasing a wide single-span segmental arch and an ornate herringbone pattern on the railed parapet. The abutments include sunk panels adorned with quatrefoil ornament, a moulding at road level, and pilasters topped with lamp standards. The bridge was constructed to connect Hunslet with the eastern part of the city and is named after the area known as Crown Point Wharf located to the west. It is part of the significant development of the Aire and Calder Navigation at Leeds Lock, which began around 1820. The bridge was cast at the Park Ironworks in Sheffield and had a construction cost of £8,750.
