Description
The Aire and Calder Navigation Cut and locks is a channel constructed to facilitate navigation past the Leeds dam, featuring two sets of locks. It was likely built between 1830 and 1840 by engineer George Leather, following the line of the original Aire and Calder Navigation Cut established between 1699 and 1700. The structure includes stone lining and edges, along with wooden and iron lock gates and fittings. The channel is approximately 200 meters long and varies in width from about 10 meters to 25 meters, with parallel lock chambers at the eastern end; the narrower northern lock is currently not in use, and its gates have been repaired. The channel leads to Clarence Dock on the south side, passing under the Clarence Road bridge. Historically, the Aire and Calder Navigation Act was enacted in 1699, which allowed for improvements to the river, enabling the transport of goods by water to the city, which had previously relied solely on road transport. This development led to the establishment of riverside wharves and warehouses, allowing merchants to ship cloth directly to Hull and the Continent. For more historical context, see the Basin of New Dock, Clarence Road.
