Description

The Old Corn Mill is a corn mill, now used as a store, dating from around 1800. It is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and features a Welsh blue-slate roof. The building stands three storeys high with a loft and has a three-bay facade. At the base, there is a plinth, and two six-panel doors flank a central bay that displays the inscription "18+66" beneath a window, indicating the height of a flood that occurred in that year. The openings on the ground floor have flat arches with voussoirs, and the windows are fitted with projecting sills. The gables are coped and supported by kneelers. The right-hand side of the building has an off-centre doorway with a window to its right. On the first floor, there are windows flanking a central taking-in door, along with additional doorways leading to the second floor and loft.

Inside, at the rear of the ground floor, there is a wheel-house with an arched entry to the mill-race, housing an intact cast-iron undershot waterwheel with wooden buckets and original gearing by Porteus of Leeds. Above the wheel, a semi-circular arch provides support for the timbered floor above. Each floor contains appropriate gearing, grinding stone chambers, and wooden cog-wheels. The ceilings are supported by square-cut pine spine beams and joists, with wide floorboards. In the south-west corner, there is a half-turn closed-string staircase featuring a moulded handrail and stick balusters. The mill last operated in 1976.

The Old Corn Mill is a fine example of its type and is part of the Harewood Estate.
