HAREWOOD HARROGATE ROAD SE34NW LS17 (west side, off) 2/98 The Old Corn Mill

GV II

Cornmill, now store. c 1800. Hammer-dressed stone, Welsh blue-slate roof. 3 storeys and loft. 3-bay facade: plinth, 6-panel doors flank central bay which has "18+66" under window, marking the height of a flood in that year. Openings Nov 16 have flat arches with voussoirs. Windows with projecting sills. Coped gables with kneelers. Right-hand return has off-centre doorway with window to right. 1st floor has windows flanking central taking-in door with other doorways above to 2nd floor and loft.

Interior: at ground floor rear is wheel-house with arched entry to mill-race and retaining intact cast-iron undershot waterwheel with wooden buckets and intact gearing by Porteus (Leeds). Set above wheel is semi-circular-arch lending support to timbered floor above. Each floor has appropriate gearing grinding stone chambers and wooden cog-wheels. Ceilings have square-cut pine spine beams and joists with wide floorboards. Set in the south-west corner is ½-turn closed- string staircase with moulded handrail and stick balusters. Last ran in 1976.
