Description
Stables' House is a house built in the mid to late 18th century, constructed from punch-dressed stone and topped with a stone slate roof. It features a two-cell central-entry plan with a double-depth lateral outshut and stands two storeys tall. The house has two main bays plus one lower bay. The corners are accentuated with quoins.
The entrance, located between two bays of windows, has a doorway framed by margin-dressed tie-stone jambs and a chamfered surround. The windows, which were originally three lights with plain stone surrounds, include a 24-pane Yorkshire sash on the left, while the window above retains flat-faced mullions. The gables are coped and have kneelers, with stacks present. The lower bay on the right features a doorway to the left of a window, both of which have monolithic lintels dressed with false voussoirs, and there is a window above. A gable stack is situated to the right, and the outshut to the left has a lean-to roof with coping and a kneeler.
At the rear, there is a tall stair window, which is partly blocked, flanked by square windows with Yorkshire sashes; the left ground floor window has been altered. The outshut to the right contains a Tudor-arched doorway with a hollow-chamfered surround, which may date back to the 16th century and could have been re-used from the nearby Harewood Castle. The left-hand return of the outshut has quoins and bays of windows.
Inside, the doorway leads into a stair hall featuring a framed-newel stair with gun-barrel turned balusters.
