Description
The stables to Ravensknowle Hall, built between 1859 and 1862, are attributed to the architect Richard Tress. Constructed from hammer-dressed stone, the building features a pitched slate roof with overhanging eaves supported by large ornamental cast iron brackets. The gable ends are coped and set on kneelers with moulded consoles. The stables have a U-shaped plan, closed by a wall with ornamental cast iron gates in a round archway, flanked by elaborately carved consoles and topped with ornamental cresting. The end elevations display blind round arches and semi-circular lunettes with glazing bars. The structure is two storeys high facing the courtyard, with planked segment-headed doors and windows that also have glazing bars. A central tower is present, featuring one oculus on each side, a moulded cornice on quadrant brackets, an ornamental parapet, and an octagonal lantern topped with a stilted arcade, foliage capitals, and a moulded cornice leading to an ogee copper dome with a finial. The side elevations are adorned with concentric blind round arches that include keystones supporting the eaves cornice.
