Description

RAVENSKNOWLE ROAD 1. 5113 (West Side) No 141 SE 1616 35/1134 II 2. Circa 1830-40. Former offices to Ravensknowle Park, but apparently pre-dating the present Ravensknowle Hall by a few years. Ashlar. Hipped slate roof. One storey. Moulded eaves cornice. Blocking course. 3 blocks, linked by a gateway, forming a U-shaped courtyard. North block has 2 sashes with glazing bars in moulded surrounds to front, and 2 plus doorway in moulded surrounds to courtyard. The gateway, at the north end of the west side, is allegedly the rear entrance of the Cloth Hall, and is therefore probably part of Sir John William Ramsden's improvements of 1864. Paired blocked Tuscan pilasters taking full entablature surmounted by achievement of arms and foliage scrolls. Round arch with moulded Gibbs surround and ornamental cast iron gates. South of this is a range with 2 doors in moulded surrounds (one a stable door, part glazed, with glazing bars). South block has 2 doors and 3 sashes with glazing bars, all in moulded surrounds; and (now obscured by modern garage) 2 windows in plain raised frames, and one paired window in moulded surround (all with glazing bars) to front.
