Description
St. Peter's Parish Centre, which includes The Cottage, is a former Church of England School that was converted into a parish centre and dates back to 1845. The building is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and features a stone slate roof, which is tiled on the left side. The roof has gable copings on moulded kneelers and spear finials at the apexes.
The structure consists of a two-storey cottage and a single-storey main building. The cottage has three bays with 2-light windows and a central door that has a Tudor arched head, all of which are adorned with hood moulds. To the left, there is a later single-storey addition that matches the original design. The cottage projects in front of the main building, which is a long range that ends in a projecting wing on the right side.
The main building features square-headed windows that are mullioned and transomed, with most having six lights, while some have eight lights. There are three lancet windows on the right gable. The near elevation has ten mullioned and transomed windows, all with hood moulds, and two near central doorways with Tudor heads and 2-light fanlights. A plaque at the front of the building reads "CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHOOLS ERECTED AD 1845."
Inside the parish centre, there are pews from the old Church of St. Peter, designed by Thomas Taylor. Although most ceilings have been lowered, broad queen-post trusses are still visible. The original three-tier wooden and glass panelled partitioning between classrooms remains intact.
