Description
Christ Church is a Gothic Revival church built in 1867 by W H Crossland of Leeds, designed in the style of 1300, although it remains unfinished. The church is constructed from hammer dressed stone and features quoins and a pitched slate roof. It has a 5-bay nave and a 2-bay chancel, with north and south aisles each containing a porch.
The west tower is three tiers high, with diagonal buttressing and a crenellated parapet topped with tall crocketted pinnacles. Although the tower was intended to have a tall slender spire, this was never completed. The bell chamber includes traceried 6-light louvred openings. The east window is a 5-light stained glass window, intricately traceried with engaged colonnettes featuring foliated capitals and a hood mould with figure head stops. There is a similar 4-light stained glass window on the west side, and the clerestory windows are 3-light, also traceried with three trefoils. The aisle windows are 2-light, with stained glass in the south aisle, one of which is of German origin. The hood moulds above these windows have plain square stops and were likely intended to be carved in place.
Inside, notable features include a tall chancel arch adorned with foliage carving and aisle arches supported by quatrefoil columns with vine-carved capitals. There is a screened Lady Chapel on the north side and a round carved stone font. The roof is a hammer beam design.
