Description
Purlwell Infant School is a former board school, now a day school, built around 1870, likely designed by Walter Hanstock. The building is constructed from pitch-faced stone with ashlar dressings and features a very steeply pitched slate roof with chamfered gable copings. It is a single-storey structure with gabled cross wings at each end. The central gabled portion projects forward and includes three lancet lights, along with an adjoining square tower that has a louvred bell chamber. To the right, there is a similar gable with an adjoining square tower topped by a slender pyramidal roof. Two small gables are positioned over cross windows, each featuring an oculus beneath a relieving arch. There are entrance porches on the left and right, both gabled, with inscriptions reading "BOYS" and "INFANTS," while the central porch has the inscription "GIRLS." The rear of the building has projecting wings made of deeper coursed stone, and there are some modern additions.
