Description

A terrace of three houses, originally built as a girls’ boarding school in 1798, with alterations in the mid-19th century. The buildings were constructed for the Moravian Church and are of red brick with stone quoins, and have stone slate roofs; No. 52 has taller copings. Nos. 50 and 54 each have two storeys and four bays, featuring sash windows with keystones. The doorways are distinguished by fanlights, architraves, and small cornices. No. 52 is slightly set back, with two storeys and three bays of sash windows with plaster lintels, and a doorway matching the style of its neighbours. In 1811, the houses were converted into private residences. Notably, Miss Wooler, Charlotte Brontë’s governess, resided in the central house.
