Description

27 Market Place is a mid-19th century building constructed from ashlar and featuring three storeys. It has a cornice with modillions and dentils, along with a parapet supported by panelled piers. A continuous moulded cill band runs along the second floor. The ground floor showcases fluted Composite pilasters and a full entablature adorned with foliage carving in the frieze. There are five ranges of sash windows. The ground floor windows are round-arched, featuring masks on the keystones, polished marble columns in the jambs, carved foliage spandrels, and carved foliage panels beneath each window. The first floor windows are segment-headed, with panelled pilasters, carved spandrels, and alternating triangular and segmental pediments. The second floor windows have moulded consoles supporting the cills, festoons on either side of the frame, and rounded corners at the top, with sunk panels set in between. The porch has panelled double doors, surrounded by carved foliage panels, with round-headed side windows that have moulded surrounds, a moulded cornice, and ornate cresting. Attached to the east end of No 27, just below the arch leading to Market Walk, is part of a shop window belonging to Messrs Fillans of No 2 Market Walk, dating from the late 19th century. This features curved glass panels in moulded wooden frames, with painted glass panels above and beside the windows, displaying characteristic late 19th century lettering.
