Description

The Market Cross, located in the Market Place, was erected in 1671 by Sir John Ramsden, 1st Baronet, following his grant of a Royal Charter to hold a market at this site. It features two modern ashlar steps leading up to an Ionic column that has a roughly gadrooned base and small swags hanging from the volutes. Above the column is a square die that displays achievements of arms on each side, topped with a ball finial. The sculptural style of the Market Cross is similar to the 17th-century garden house at Whitley Beaumont.
