Description

Wood Field, including the stable and coachhouse block to the north, is a Gothic villa built around 1870. It features rock-faced sandstone with ashlar dressings and has pitched slate roofs. The building is two storeys high with attics and a basement on the east side. Its asymmetrical plan includes slightly projecting wings that end in coped gables on kneelers.

The villa has various three and four-light mullioned windows, some with sashes and others with casements. Most windows have four-centred arched lights set in oblong chamfered surrounds, with one featuring a cusped ogival light and another a straight-headed design with a transom. Many windows have hoodmoulds, most of which end in lozenge-shaped label stops. The principal gable ends are topped with carved stone finials, and there are various attic dormers with coped gables that also feature delicate wrought iron finials.

The porch has a pitched roof and a coped gable end, with a diagonal buttress and a moulded three-centred arch leading to panelled double doors adorned with elaborate iron hinges in naturalistic patterns. There are several one-storey projections to the west and south, which have moulded cornices with intricately carved bosses. The stable and coachhouse block to the north is constructed in the same materials and style, featuring a louvre in the roof ridge topped with a delicate iron weather vane.
